Distingished Member of the Brigade

The induction of Distinguished Members of the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade began in October 2000 to fully recognize the contributions of the Brigade's most renowned and influential members. Inductees are nominated by an active duty member of the ARTB, and they must have served in the Ranger Training Command, Ranger Department, Ranger Training Brigade or have contributed significantly to the promotion of Ranger training in ways that standout in the eyes of all Rangers past and present.

History of the Ranger Tab

Ranger training at Ft. Benning, Georgia began in September 1950 during the Korean War with the formation and training of 17 Airborne Ranger companies by the Ranger Training Command. In October 1951, the Commandant of the US Army Infantry School established the Ranger Training Department and extended Ranger Training to all combat units in the Army. The first class for individual candidates graduated on 1 March 1952. The Korean War Rangers were the very first Rangers to wear the now famous and highly coveted Ranger Tab. On 1 November 1987, the Ranger Department reorganized into the Ranger Training Brigade and activated 4th, 5th, and 6th Ranger Training Battalions. The Ranger Training Brigade later expanded with the activation of 7th Ranger Training Battalion but in 1995 returned to its original three battalions when the Desert Phase was removed from the Ranger Course Program of Instruction.
