Born in Easley, South Carolina, Philip was the son of Robert Sherman Porter and Mary McWhorter Porter of Pickens. Philip graduated from Pickens High School and went to Clemson University where he graduated with a degree in Horticulture and Urban Forestry. He was a member of the Army Rangers and deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia in support of Operation Gothic Serpent. Ranger Porter proudly serving our country in the United States Army as a Communications Specialist from Aug 1991 - May 1995 with 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia. While in the Regiment, He trained his company of 150 men in the use of various communications equipment, night vision equipment, and sighting devices. Porter participated in numerous battalion and company deployments such as Team Spirit (Korea), Cobra Gold (Thailand), Jungle Operations Training (Panama), and Northern Crusade (England). He also, served with Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, Somalia, while deployed in support of the United Nations. Philip owned and operated Elijah Gray Farms, a tree nursery that he was passionate about. He enjoyed restoring classic cars with his sons and spending outdoor time with his family. Philip was a member of American Legion Post 11 in Pickens, SC, and attended Pathway Church in Piedmont. |
