Kyle Bruce Osborn was born Aug 5 1986 in Lafayette, Indiana son of Miriam Shively Osborn and Creigh Osborn. He was a 2005 graduate of McCutcheon High School where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams, and, as a senior, was team captain and a state qualifier in wrestling. Following high school, Kyle attended Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN where he studied civil engineering from 2005-2007 as well as was on the University Wrestling team. It was here he met his wife Maggie Klason. Kyle enlisted in the United States Army 18th of October, 2007. Kyle Completed basic training at Fort Benning, followed immediately by Airborne School, the Fort Bragg for additional training to join Special Forces. Kyle not olt completed the grueling training as a young PFC, but impressed his board evaluators. Due to his lack of experience in the military, he was not chosen to join the SF ranks however, was encouraged to come back in a few years. In the summer of 2009, Kyle received orders to his first duty station, Fort Polk Louisiana to join the JRTC OPFOR of the 509th. Kyle was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion 509th Infantry as an assistant machine gunner and team leader from April 2009 to November 2010. Determined to use this as an opportunity to better himself as a soldier and taking advantage of being in a training unit, he proudly earned his Ranger Tab. In October 2010, he married his wife, Maggie. SGT Osborn was ruthless when it came to attending as many schools as his unit would allow, to include Jumpmaster and Sniper School. From November 2010, Kyle served as the Battalion/Post Pre-Ranger NCOIC for HHC, 1st Battalion 509th Infantry. While assigned the 509th kyle completed Ten Opposing Forces Training Rotations at Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), Fort Polk Louisiana. In the three short year, he was promoted to Sergeant. In the of 2011, Kyle, with his wife by his side, PCS'd to Vicenza, Italy to serve with the distinguished 1st Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team: Sky Soldiers. SGT Osborn was assigned as an Assistant Reconnaissance Team Leader. As the Assistant Team Leader for Team Four, he was responsible for the overall health, morale, welfare, training, and accountability of all assigned personnel and worked side by side with the Team Leader to ensure all Team Four scouts were physically and mentally ready to deploy anywhere in the world. Kyle, even being the small guy, filled the shoes of his new role with high respect from his superiors, peers, and subordinates. The 173rd has a profound history of excellence and Kyle was determined to leave his mark of excellence. He deployed as a Sniper Team leader, to Afghanistan June 29th, 2012 in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM XIII. Three short months into the deployment, on September 13, 2012, during an important Battalion mission, Kyle's unit was engaged by a large enemy force with small-arms, rocket-propelled grenades, and recoilless rifle fire. As he was directing the Team's fire, Kyle was struck on the right side. While still engaging the enemy, Kyle died of wounds with his brothers by his side. Kyle had simple goals; to go far in the military, love his wife and take care of his Soldiers. He always improved morale, was a great leader AND follower, but most of all, he put everyone around him before himself. Kule lived and breathed the Army and gave it his all until the very end. Kyle is loved and remembered by his wife Maggie as a devoted and adventurous husband. Kyle's mother, Miriam, will always remember his passion, stubbornness and crooked smile. SGT Osborn is remembered by all who served with him as the brazen soldier you wanted next to you, the go-to NCO for any task, and the short stature, country loving hillbilly who you could always count on to have a good time. Kyle touched the lives of so many in the military and civilian world alike and continues to be an example and inspiration to those who knew him best.
