Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: JIM OWENS Message: YOU WANT THE TRUTH? -- YOU MAY NOT LIKE THIS BUT HERE IT IS -- *** Time to spill the beans, so to speak, I retired from the Army in 1992 as a 1SG with 20+ years, I had almost 11years as a Ranger Instructor, serving at the Mountain Ranger Camp and the Florida Ranger Camp, completed 2 ˝ years with A. Co. 2/75th. ** The reason I telling you this—Once I left the Army, a short time later, I joined the U.S. Navy, that’s right, I joined the Navy Law Enforcement. I now have almost 15years with the U.S. Navy. I have a unique perspective on what it’s like to have served in two branches of service. While serving with the Army I was never exposed to serving with or leading females due to my MOS and the Units I served with, HOWEVER, that all changed when I joined the U.S. Navy. I am going to enlighten you on my experience while serving with and leading females in the Navy Law Enforcement field. 1st problem, once a female thinks she’s pregnant she goes to the doctor for confirmation, once confirmed the doctor gives her a Letter of Pregnancy, immediate upon returning to her unit, her Gun Card is pulled, she can No Longer Arm up, she is pulled from Police Patrols and cannot even ride as a partner in a Patrol car, she can no longer be assigned to ANY POST requiring a Fire Arm nor can she be placed at any post where she might be confronted with physical force and all of this due to the Pregnancy. 2nd problem for every female that as we call it “pops as pregnant” she is immediately assigned as limited duty, the Unit will get “NO REPLACEMENTS” for this pregnant female, so if you have 6 to 8 pregnant females you are automatically down that many of bodies in your manning and none of your patrol duties, post requirements, main gate duties, vehicle inspection requirements, watches, or any other Law Enforcement requirements will change due to this loss of manpower. These females once they are labeled pregnant are now in a limited duty status and can only work basically in an admin status, in an office environment, filing, stapling, handing out passes, etc., etc. 3rd problem, now the real problem highlights itself, all the men in the unit now have to carry and perform not only their assigned duties but now have to perform and cover the missing females job requirements, that’s right, they pick up all of the requirements of the missing females. Now due to the shortage created by the missing females the men are now taxed even more, now I cannot have as many men attend additional MOS related schools, now I cannot let as many men take leave to spend time with their families, now I have to have the men on the road work twice as hard to fill in and cover the missing females job responsibilities and requirements. None of the Law Enforcement post, stations, check points, vehicle inspections, and etc. etc. will ever change due to these missing females. They become in essence an albatross. The men always have to step up and cover those missing female bodies’ requirements, and yes it does cause internal animosity amongst the men. 4th problem these females are out on limited duty for up to ONE YEAR, that’s right each one gets up to a year of limited duty and on top of that some of them elect to get out of the service early due to their pregnancy (early out), the men are not afforded any of these special options at all…. unfortunately I could go on and on with problems associated with females in the male units, this is just the tip of the iceberg so to say, every leader who has served with females has seen the revolving door of females coming in and leaving the service early for one reason or another and the males are always having to cover their exodus from the units in one way or another.
