Message: According to our By-Laws posted under the "About Us" link above, the offices of secretary and treasurer can be combined. That doesn't mean that they have to be or that I am suggesting they should be. Mark has done a great job at handling each of those duties. Ideally, we would have a volunteer for each.

Message: December Meeting coming up. Officer Elections, Nominations. So as I was having a conversation with a Fellow Officer. I ask this. Are we not supposed to have four Officers ? President, Vice Pres. Secretary, and Treasurer. We currently have three. Steve, myself and Mark Jordan. Mark has been graciously playing both roles as said Sec. and Treasurer. Can we get some others involved ? Additionally, I may not be able to uphold my Position in the long term. Personal priorities may take Precedence. Maybe a stand-by VP. Message: Cool night at the Overhang last Thursday. Only 5 of us reported as instructed. President Hawk said no meeting, therefore, no report. I had informed that we would not have a secretary since Mark had flown the coop for some destination known only to him. Chris came later from sanding on his 47 Ford(?) and reported that we needed 14 to 15 Turkeys for the troops for Thanksgiving. Steve said no problem, he would strong arm Wall Mart. No reports yet for needy families. J. D. was present, and we all affirmed our appreciation of such a job well done! A R.I. came from the frist time to the meeting from down Cherokee County way. I don't recall his name so Steve will have to fill you in as they went over several items at the club . Next month.........

Message:

Last night I was notified by Bill Miller (BDQ) that Major Walter Gunn passed away yesterday at 1:10 pm after an extended illness. Ranger Gunn was a former instructor in the Benning phase.

I served with him in Vietnam and he was the Senior Advisor of the 37th ARVN Ranger Bn. We really grew close while serving at Khe Sanh fire base during the Tet Offensive when the 37th Rangers were sent to assist the Marines. His leadership and professionalism helped get us out of Khe Sanh alive.

Major Gunn was a gentle and kind man who put his troops before himself. He was well known and liked by all who knew him - especially me.

Arrangements are being made today by his wife, Phyllis, in Crossville, TN; additional information will follow.

Doug asked me to share any additional information regarding his passing. Larry was 76 years old & had numerous medals from Vietnam including 3 Purple Hearts. His funeral will be at Vaughn's Funeral Home, Weston, MO on Wed, Nov 6 at 2:00pm. Ranger Beauchamp was a hard worker and never complained about anything. Message: The memorial dedication ceremony was well carried out by the work of many people in our association. The three point men were LTC Brian Cunningham, LTC J D Kirby, and LTC Keith Antonia. These three Rangers worked hard & had to negotiate a lot of obstacles to get everything approved for this very special event. They deserve a big salute from all of us. Job well done. In addition, I once worked for Captain J D Kirby & I've learned a lot from this officer. I'm very proud to be a member of this association.

Message: USMRA October 2013 Meeting

...nearing the Ranger Memorial Dedication at Camp Merrill this Monday, I use the minutes as a reminder and advertisement for upcoming events...there may be more than 100 present, and there may be needs for more members to facilitate the visitors...please be sober... somewhat coherent...

...out on the back porch of The OverHang, a fine evening coming upon Mosby and the Etowah, Al Parten, VP, had spent quite some time getting the event organized, preparing his delicious beer brats while Mike Keohane brought some delicious low country boil...Willard Langdon, Chaplain, has managed to have been on speaking terms again with his wife and a fine, mouth watering pan of banana pudding was added while Chuck Windham's award winning baked beans made our quaint and humble fare surpass the feasts of kings and world leaders...(those other than the ones present already)...

...Steve Hawk, President, asks Willard to begin us with a prayer which is delivered in that sincere fashion we appreciate so much in him...

...next Steve asks for the bumbling Secretary or Treasurer report...given quickly by Lt Fuzz so as to properly drop back out of sight taking notes...freakin' butterbar bozos like Bob Bischoff, past manager of the club...we have money but not as much as we did last month...the exact penny was given at the meeting but opsec requires that I am not to be precise in the minutes...thank you Bob Williams, Editor at Large...

...I didn't write down Julio's number for the merc suicide the other day when Al alerted me to the abuse of our website and since he, the generous man, guaranteed all that stuff I thought maybe some of us might not want to raise some funds for the association...likely our webmaster has ideas for wrestling funds...

...J.D.Kirby next provides an excellent detailed scenario of our upcoming Memorial Dedication...our uniform is navy blazer, white open shirt, no tie and khaki pants...those speaking such as J.D. and Brian Cunningham and Keith Antonio, members of our Historical Committee, will be restrained in tight necks...

...parking up Black Farms Road and in the Church across from the gate...set up on 27 Oct with Steve Hawk offering the assistance of LCHS Jr ROTC cadets as needed...Chuck Windham monitoring the MRA table with Lt Fuzz on an idiot chord so coins, pins, and donations might happen...

...could be big...Old CCO T shirts maybe?...do we want to make this look like an Ellijay yard sale or will we honor the moment as sacred for all those present and those unable to attend?...(how much you think those bright yellow ones could go for?...15 at least)...

...anyway, there was a notice made earlier on the message board about the event, at 11:00 this Monday Morning...please attend if you're able to in person but if not, we will know you're present in spirit too...

...April 20 is the Porter Village Easter Egg Hunt this next year, as Chris Fuller, Club Manager provided that info...we will do better than last year folks...Chris, Steve, Mike (Mountain) and Fuzz...did it... not cool...

...Steve asked Chris about the needs for the turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas... Chris remembered Amie Close and Roy's personal generosity in providing so many last year, more than 25 I think along with another 8 by local merchants such as our good friend, Wal Mart...the thought is that twenty are probably needed this year...

...Steve asks Bob Williams, POC for Manuel's 5 million bullion, if he has anything to add and thankfully Bob adds a thread of intelligence to a rather basic expression of communal counsel...

...Bob was with Cecil Sager when Cecil briefed J.D. Kirby, then Camp CO, about a contingency plan for adverse conditions by answering his question, "Sgt Sager, what is your contingency plan for inclement weather?"...Cecil answered, "Sir, we are going to react."...twice!... same question same answer...

..."Come back when you have a plan Sgt Sager."...ah, you love these moments all your life...Doug Perry added that he was the Tac NCO and BillyHardbody Olds his Tac Officer...good to have Doug back and healthy again...

...Bob then went on to explain about how and why we have had difficulty with submissions for the Ranger Hall of Fame, particularly because our membership requirements don't require a DD-214...(if we back you, that will be required in the future, although it's good to check for sure that you are given all due recognition for schools, service and awards)...

...Bob includes accurate information via Bob Bischoff and Art McCann to Bob Dawes and Gen Kiernan that we, being 90% of WAR, can certainly make our own nominations for the Ranger Hall of Fame...Doug Perry added that since a few RHOF members are also our members we could directly forward names for selection without going thru any filters by others (mentioned but not reported)...Bob agrees that is what we, as an organization, want to do; be on the list for direct submissions of nominations...

...Bob Dawes was mentioned by a few members as coming to the dedication and we might be able to talk with him about these matters concerning our own direction with the Ranger Hall of Fame...

...Bob Suchke gave a coin report and a plug for the Dawsonville Moonshine Festival going on now, this weekend...Doug Perry says Esther is charging $4 more in the PX so Bob endorses City Liquor in downtown Dawsonville, along with over 300 locations statewide where one might purchase such a concoction...Chuck Windham had a bottle signed that very night that was auctioned for $70 at a recent event for old sergeants...

...adjournment made, food eaten, those not in attendance were talked about...all real Rangers present...

...addendum please...why not have breakfast this Monday at 8am in the Mess Hall and have meeting for November right after?...bring your fancy stuff to change into so you can get coffee, egg yolk and gravy on your overalls ahead of time...and then we get to park near too...Al says me and him are all that's needed since Doug Perry said a meeting needs three officers so if we're there, and of course Steve too...Tedro is coming up with Bishop...heck, we only need banana pudding for dessert!...

...just a thought...Steve can't vote...

...Bullet Bob is busy today with being useful so if any needs contact information for Bob Suchke, he is not wanting his cell phone published...

...respectfully submitted...

...Lt Fuzz, aide de camp...RLTW...

Message: Found an unopened box in my storage area - it contained a gift from my niece & nephew. When they were little, I would take them on overnight hikes in the Catskills and regale them with stories about the Smokies. So, knowing that I had given away all of my camping gear after hitting the big 50, they decided to give me a present - a brand new sleeping bag & a pad. Nice thought but, at 75, I have a bit of trouble in getting up off the ground - I need a bed. So, I was thinking of donating the gear to the Boy Scout Troop. If they will acccept it, I will have it in my Jeep on the 28th.

Message: Howdy! I've got some friends from a LRS unit I was in before I came to the MRC the first time that are doing a section hike on the AT next year starting at Springer Mountain as a reunion activity. Several of the folks in that unit were Mountain RIs (Bauldry, Rhodes, me - and I'm sure I'm missing some) and even more were RIs in other phases. Anyway - we were thinking that doing the hike around the same time as the Critter Cookout/Open House could open up some other opportunities for folks that might not want to make the hike. Is there going to be a CC next year? Cheers!

Message: I have mentioned "Ranger" Rachel, the little girl, my sister's friend, who has Down's syndrome & back & leg problems since birth. Watching her struggle through her daily exercise routine made me call her "Ranger." There is no "give up" in her. My sister sent me a picture of Rachel in a science exhibit pulling her-self up with a rope and pulley. The rope was a "climbing rope" and she was wearing "climbing gloves." I took the liberty of telling her that she is in "basic mountaining." If I can get her parents to leave California, maybe we can borrow the sixty foot cliff and have her pass the basic course.

Message: We are prepared to dedicate the monument commemorating mountain Ranger training at Camp Merrill. The ceremony is set for Monday, 28 October, at 1100, in front of the Headquarters at Camp Merrill. The Honorary Colonel of the Ranger Training Brigade, Keith Antonia, will speak and the monument will be unveiled. A reception will follow.

We ask, and encourage, as many of you as possible to attend the event. It would be great if you wore the MRA uniform. If you don't have it, or you don't even know what it is, don't let that deter you. We still want you there. Your contributions made the event possible. It's you ceremony. Please support it.

USMRA Sep '13 Mtng

...gathered around the back porch of the OverHang, 15 loyal members of the Association met in harmonious joy...some returning, some from over the mountain and some on this side of the TVD...Steve Hawk, President, asked Willard Langdon, Chaplain, to begin this meeting with prayer...Willard delivered a fine one again, reminding all of us present how sincere he is as Chaplain...

...Treasurer's Report and Secretary's Minutes were given, accepted and approved...

...Old Business...Steve reported, after talking with the ScoutMaster that the USMRA will continue sponsoring troop 36...

...New Business... ...October is our Annual Eating Meeting...this year on 3 Oct...promises of extremely fine baked beans from Chuck Windham and mouth watering banana pudding from Willard Langdon are enough to make sure you can be there!...other stuff too but seriously, these two foods are unforgettably good!...

...turning to our Ranger Memorial Team, JD Kirby updated us on the Memorial... recognizing Brian Cunningham amd Keith Antonio as main contributors to that team...

...Monday, 28 Oct at 1100 is the time of dedicating this last of three monuments our Historical Committee has established...(more previously noted on Message Board)...

...JD Kirby brought up an interesting and overlooked concern...he still thinks the MRA is cheated on Ranger Hall of Fame nominees..."WAR nominees have to be in by Sep 15...we're largest group in WAR...we should apply to nominate 3 each year...and we have not...Brian and Keith says we should be able to...some say do it before Sep 15...

...with that discussion winding down, the meeting was adjourned on a cool September night on the OverHang's back porch...

...respectfully submitted...

...Ranger Memorial Dedication Ceremony...

...please make sure you and all your Ranger Buddys attend this one of a kind ceremony...

...The day to target is Monday, 28 Oct at 1100 hours around Headquarters Building and flag pole parking lot...

...Dedication speakers will be Brian Cunningham, former Company Commander of 2nd Ranger Company as Master of Ceremonies...

...Keith Antonio, Ranger Hall of Fame and Honorary Colonel of the Ranger Training Brigade, and mastermind genius in the donation drive that amounted to well more than enough for this site...

...JD Kirby, former Camp Commander and driving force behind this last of three Ranger Memorials, successfully ending the three site project with money to spare...

...Keith says food/drinks for 100...

...we expect up to 4,385... governors, generals, mayors, dignitaries, moonshiners, Rangers...everybody you know...

...and to make it an event, camping up at Hickory Flats Cemetery for all adventurous enough to verify the nocturnal events up there...

...JD says each donor will receive a commemorative pin and dress is business casual...

...there is a need probably for bumpers to surround the monument so donations are still very much appreciated from anyone still able to be generous with a donation...

...call Chris Fuller at the OverHang for accommodations... (706) 864-3367 ext 5130 or 5131...

With Rifle, LBE and full rucksack (sand filled ammo can plus water rations etc), I remember that it was NO cake walk. That was back in the days when everyone wore boots to run in too. We had a bunch of ROK's in our class and if the ROK Officer didn't like the way his men ran, he would line them up and then knock them down to the ground with his fist. They would hop right back up, say something in Korean and act like nothing happened. The ROK's didn't put up with any $hit!

Message: Fifty-two years ago, the Berlin Wall went up. Three Ranger Instructors (Sgt Fish & myself from the RMC and SFC Sandlin from Elgin) were assigned to the Sixth Infantry and there was, at least, not counting officers, one or two tabbed Rangers in each line company. I don't know about the other's plans but I had my eye on the marshalling yards in East Berlin as a good target of opportunity if the balloon went up. I was tasked to take two officers from Seventh Army on an intelligence patrol in East Berlin. One look at the brand new "flying saucers" and low quarters, and I "made" them as SF types from Bad Tolz. I got a bit pissed at the attention they were paying to "my" railroad marshalling yard so I dropped a few names from Bad Tolz and said I had "dibs" on the trains. They took it in the spirit I intended and the rest of the tour was highly technical.

...With 12 members present, Steve Hawk asks Bob Williams to open with a prayer...Bob delivers an excellent one and we hope Willard Langdon is enjoying his time away for the summer and will be back soon...

...Steve Hawk begins with a request to help a midget football 8 under team for $200 in getting jerseys...the lady at the PX initiated the request... Passed...

...the charter for our sponsored Boy Scouts came up about the gay discussion ; we have sponsored these boys since day 1...close to 20 years ago when Bob Suchke began the group.. David O'rear continued...

...Charles DeJarnette speaks about the Bible saying we should just love them...Bob Williams adds from his experience in teaching and coaching that this opportunity for us to sponsor them "affects kids who can be successful; won't hurt us a bit"...

...Ed Gross objected and gave a very good argument for leadership standards being ignored in the Boy Scouts in favor of monetary support from major sponsors...excellent consideration...

...Steve and Bob both talk about seeing many in schools who have needs for free lunches and clothes...

...Sunny Bragg asked what we're voting on after making a 'point of order'.

...I made motion to continue the sponsorship, seconded and passed with 3 dissenting, Ed, Sunny and Chris Fuller.

...Steve then asks for funds for a frozen drink and cotton candy machine...slushies and cotton candy...for ROTC cadets...can be used both here and there...$2,000.00...

...Sunny asks "who owns it"..Steve says "whoever buys it"...Ed Gross objects that it's not for Rangers and their families... Steve can't make motion; he's just the messenger...think about it for a bit...tabled til later...

...Al Parten asks to nominate Jeff Eversole for Fallen Ranger per request by Cookie Brinkley, a long time friend of the Rangers...Bob says he has 5 requests already and who gets the required information into Bob first will be the ones selected for 2014...

...the back of the OverHang on a cool summer evening was enjoyed by all of u, and s as there was no dissenting vote to adjourn, Bullet Bob Suchke being OTF...we sat and enjoyed the camaraderie of being together again...

hello - I don't know if you can help me or not, but thought I would at least give a try...

my son graduated from Ranger school in October 10...one of the two classes from that year with no 'class photo' available online. Like a lot of moms, I expect, I have a wall that is dedicated to all of his graduations & achievements, and cannot believe that after surviving that brutal training there is no photo to commemorate it! I have tried to contact the 75th's media office at Ft Benning but have not received response.

Kiddo is 23 years old and just returned from his 4th deployment...I continue to be amazed at his strength...

any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

Message: USMRA Jun '13 Mtng

...Steve Hawk, President, begins the meeting by asking Bob Williams, Webmaster, to say the opening prayer...with about 15 members present, Bob delivers a good one...

...Treasurer report has us in the black and tax work has been prepared and submitted...

...general talk about the Critter CookOut until Sunny Bragg asks 'what are we going to do if it happens again?'...Bob Williams redirected the question by reinforcing that the very purpose of the USMRA is to serve and support the Camp Personnel and Families and we did just that...Bob Suchke and Chris Fuller concurring...Bob Williams continued that we are guests of the camp in the first place...

...Sunny continued that "it was too crowded" to which Chris replied that 'if it was too crowded inside, people could always go outside'...the torrential rains thru out the weekend made for one wet CCO...perhaps if Sunny used his prosthetic leg instead of having the bulky wheelchair take up room for three, he could also contribute to a solution...

...prior CCOs were talked about: the one where rain, sleet and snow blew the tent away; the one where Steve crawled under a serving table, inside the tent, to stay dry while Tommy Wilburn was sleeping on a cot full of water with only his nose and mouth above...

...New Business began with Gary Head's need for $50 more to go with the $100 to pay for a tire on his son-in-law's smoker that went flat while coming to Camp...Treasurer asked if he, Gary, wanted to talk about it and he declined...motion was made, seconded, and passed...now needing only a receipt from Gary for the financial recording...

...Steve Bishop was generous enough to buy enough of this year's exclusive, CCO T-shirts that Bob broke even on his costs...

...because of the July meeting conflict date with the holiday, Bob Williams proposed and made a motion to cancel the meeting for July, returning on August 1...quickly seconded and passed...

...Steve Bishop briefly speaks of his daughter, Ashley, having been a recipient of our USMRA Scholarship, is graduating as an LPN...

...LTC O'Brien will change command on 24 Jun and CSM James will leave on 18 Jul, retiring...both ceremonies conducted at Lower Mountaineering...

...LTC Scarpola and CSM Mickey Rutledge are the new Camp Commander and Sergeant Major...

...Steve Hawk asked about verification of the scuttlebutt about one meal a day being taken from soldiers Army-wide...Steve Bishop wondered why anybody had to bring that up and nothing was confirmed on this Army Urban Legend...yet...

...Bob Suchke remembered the Rangers scaling the cliffs of Point du Hoc, during D Day so few years ago...

...a WWII, donated, 5th Ranger Battalion uniform was presented for the Historical Museum and Chris Fuller talked of a display case to properly present and safeguard the item...Bob Williams and Bob Suchke offered their help, even Steve Hawk saying a few less GWTW dolls at his house could free up some display space...

...Bob Williams spoke about the sign quickly missing from the Fallen Ranger Memorial and choices about replacing it...Chris Fuller included more information which seems to be the way that the sign may return...

...Bob Suchke was the only dissenting vote in closing the meeting...next one is August 1...

...respectfully submitted...

...Steve Hawk, President, begins by covering the Easter Egg Hunt at Porter Village on March 10...we really need some more help next year and great thanks to Chris Fuller for being so responsive in getting the grills to work...

...JD Kirby reports that considerable activity has gone on for the approval of the monument here at CFM...two questions asked have both been answered by the Forest Service; approval of the site and permission to go forward and...that we have a lease that must be renewed every few years (the next is 2014), for the Camp to remain here...each is satisfactory for moving ahead, hopefully within LTC O'Brien's tenure as Camp CO, who has been very supportive of these efforts...

...some more talk about the leasing, how long they will be renewing this next one and a new headquarters building planned for being built across the road from the current location...

...Critter CookOut talk begins with Steve, Ted Tilson and Steve Bishop answering questions, making announcements...Chris Fuller fills in Camp details...so far, all is good with Open House cancelled but our day of Fallen Rangers, Scholarships, Planning Bay Signs, CCO and May meeting are as usual...just less 'others'...

...except!...at 1400 the Camp is having Family Day beginning while we're cooking and probably will be hungry at about the time we're ready to eat...1600 is for Fallen Ranger and 1700 is when the Corbitt Brothers are scheduled to play...

...the cups we'll have this year are too ugly to duplicate, embarrassingly ugly, and instead of selling them for $19.99 to every civilian not allowed in, $3.00 to members...we may just give our yeungling away, both kegs that Ed Gross specified, for $3.00...(stay tuned for a dog that will hunt)...Barley Pop is flowing from opening to close, kegs or CCO...

...further discussions of parking passes, guests, gate guards continues for several minutes; much talking, negligible input, no minutes to regard...

...Steve asks what kind of music the Corbitt Brothers play and Chris Fuller says, "Both kinds, Country and Western"...

...Bob Williams has ordered 100 T shirts this year, some already claimed...and again endorsed the business of Steve Goines, of Goines Sign Company, Blairsville, GA, that donated the memorial road signs again this year...

...GP Mediums, cots, porta potties, all were discussed more than enough along with this year being without an Open House...but the Ranger Families will hopefully be out for a great time at CFM...

...Brian Cunningham gave the names of the Scholarship Recipients, Laura Baugh of Texas, daughter of Herbie and Karen Kehoe of Colorado...

...Planning Bay Signs will honor former RIs Andy Anderson, Vic Rosentreter, Charles Plumley, Herbie Baugh, Robert Wahlberg and George Horton III...

Sunny asked about how the scholarships are awarded and Brian explains in some detail plus refers him to the website that explains all about it...currently Keith Antonio, Brian Cunningham and JD Kirby man the committee for selections...

...a letter that was to be read at the meeting was not, as it had not been received by anyone involved in the cemetery prior to the meeting...respecting too the wishes of an original member who called Steve just before the meeting started, asking that the letter be kept silent, nothing was mentioned nor was a recording made of the very short discussion about Shady Grove Cemetery...

...as soon as the name was mentioned a motion was made, seconded and unanimously voted on that the USMRA has nothing to do any longer with this cemetery...no further discussion...30 seconds at most!...

...as details for Family Day come in, a clearer schedule of events about football, basketball, etc will become available...

...respectfully submitted...

Message: Doug and others...

...after sending an email to Doug, Steve Hawk, Al Parten and Bob Williams about this unfortunate parting of the ways, I respectfully answer Doug this last time on a public forum...

...there is no longer any USMRA members on the Shady Grove Committee...Bobbie Butler had taken both Roy and Steve off and I resigned today after receiving that email that I have forwarded to you...so, as I said, anyone interested may contact Ms Butler for more information...

...nothing about Shady Grove was brought up at our last meeting since, as you know, I advised Ms Butler to not come, any information was to be using the committee, and I only agreed to her coming two months ago because you gave her the okay...

...my minutes are in question?...please appreciate my sincerest appreciation for your kind remark...

...since October I have spent up to seven days straight, usually at least four each week...helping my 78 yr old mom take care of my 80 yr old dad, failing fast with Parkinson's as the most noticeable...but as things go south quicker, my back gave out ten days ago...but now we have a hoyer lift and today I got him a seat harness...i lift him like a scarecrow of his former self, I pat him on the back and encourage him everytime he does ANYTHING...I tuck him in at night, sleep on the floor beside him every night, sneak him ice cream with chocolate syrup every time mom leaves or goes to sleep...I wake up everytime he moves, as he gets disoriented during the night and wants to go back to his lift chair...hours I stay awake listening to his breathing, watching him nap...to see if he's still breathing...

...and I sleep when I can...your cousin knows that Doug...but she incites you and you lash out before getting answers... CONFIDENTIALLY... for you to make your own decision...

...my minutes?...come talk with my dad about sandy cross...your dad dying after the tornado that took everything when you were 14... being in the army at 15...a state trooper...Coordinator of Georgia Dept of Highway Safety for two governors...Superintendent of the Georgia State Police Academy...executor of Lester Maddox's will...

...so many times I get to love him Doug...and that's all...my minutes may be late....I may take a walkabout and you won't see me for some years...and you can make sure the minutes meet Bobbie's approval...but you've missed most of these times when this could be handled properly...

...or maybe I'll get around to it someday...not saying when...I am so sorry she has got you twisted up in this when most other people would give me a bit of credit as an honest person...

....but I don't lie and you should know not to get into something you hear only one side of...

...grave sites for Roy and Amie Close, Steve Caldwell and Kelly Smith and wife...you too...(2011)...now....I guess you, explicitly none of the others...I met Roy this past December, aware of this still being our agreement...that ended when Bobbie went on her own for an LLC, not using Casey Horne...

...satan thrives on destruction of relationships and with glee someone is happy all this got out...but I lived since 1972 an Honor Code from USAFA and I kept it up...also as Secretary one might imagine I keep up with facts...recorded as often as possible...

...should I post that email Doug or has tonight's sad events already been enough?...

...now, after apparent lies and high blood pressure, I have been released from service and I am telling the USMRA members that the positions are open because no one still is on the original committee...each one eliminated by our partner...

...No crap Doug...no crap...you're as welcome as anyone to form another committee or come up with any other plan...I tried to help the family and Rangers knowing promises made were arbitrarily changed and what looked like a joint venture was becoming a one person show with minions to do the bidding...I have more facts and no hearsays...yeah Doug...no crap...just facts...

...Thursday night's USMRA meeting was a smaller crowd at the Overhang than I expected, half of what was there than the month before...for our annual. Easter Egg Hunt, we decided for a noon launch and feeding following; we should be there at 10 am, Porter Village...usually about 7 to 10 USMRA members show, to help as needed...

...arriving on time at 9:50 am, Chris Fuller, OverHang Mgr, had set up already underway...

...Steve Hawk arrived before 10 too, bringing 600 eggs, 3 gift baskets and dozens of dollar toys for these Ranger kids up to 8 (I think)...

...Steve and I visited and hid eggs all over an area where if you stood still and looked, you could count 50 without turning your head...

...just like last year, I am aware of how this is military housing, something not available back when Steve and I were RIs here...

...kickoff at noon...11:55...4,5 people...

...11:57...300+...

...12:03...the hounds are released, age grouped to 3 areas...

...12:07...storm blew thru...a few drops still straggling...

...12:10...feasting on soft drinks, hamburgers and hot dogs grilled begins...250 ft line in 3 more minutes...

...12:15...grill goes out...changed two tanks, got another grill, swapped tanks over...Mountain Mike arrived at noon and gets the replacement grill going to continue cooking...

...12:35...hamburgers, hotdogs, can drinks, cheese...no plates or napkins or utensils...not one Ranger, Ranger Wife or Ranger Kid wavered in putting fingers to work and thanking us more than a few times for what we did for these little Rangers today...Maybe even helping maybe a 19 month old, who wandered over in the older section may have found one of three golden eggs, a big wrapped prize Easter basket to claim...maybe...I was too busy cooking...

...1:00 pm...sitting now we eat one of each, maybe two...as I've cooked most of the time, greatly helped by Mountain Mike and Chris when the nice big grill went out...Steve has been making sure every person, kid and parent, are enjoying personable chatter with Steve and his amazing candor and wit...

...Steve Hawk is a real gift for these kids, loving them like his own grand kids, having something for any child who asks, even a shiny pencil for those not getting one of thirty prize eggs...

...though I be the Lone Ranger...with Steve, Mike and Chris...

...USMRA Minutes of Feb'13

...one of the best crowds we've had in a long time with members who contribute and get the business done...

...Willard Langdon, Chaplain, provided another wonderful collection of sentiments, confirmed by so many approving comments afterwards.

...remembering how important December 10 was for Sunny Bragg, when he was VP, I asked him to tell us about January 17 this year...blank stare...

...after giving Sec/Treas notes and sitting backdown, Sunny gives me grief for putting him on the spot, he couldn't remember so fast...

...JD Kirby updates about the monument, fully funded with overflow going back into the General Fund upon completion of installation...since Nov 28, approval awaits the IMCOM up near DC...(Ft Sam Houston, TX)...

...the idea for the excellent response to funding this monument goes to Keith Antonio's proposal a few months ago...although final details have yet to be determined, any excess funds will revert to the General Fund...just to remind you...

...Andy Anderson, Vic Rosentretter, Charles Plumley, Herbie Baugh, Robert Waldberg, and George Horkin III are to be honored as former RIs, names placed on the Planning Bays...as Brian Cunningham lets Steve Hawk know that he's up first for next year...

...Brian gives April 2 as the cut off date for the two $500 scholarships that go to eligible children or grandchildren of Rangers...Chris Fuller, Overhang Manager, says most kids of these RIs are little...

...Fowl Play, the band of classic rock and roll that Brian plays with, is scheduled for our Friday night fish fry...The Corbitt Brothers will return for Saturday at noon...

...Al Parten, VP, spoke of his daughter, Brittany, a recipient of our Scholarship Fund four years ago, who will soon graduate with a RN degree in Nursing...get married and move to Utah...

...ten minutes in Sunny says we need to hear the Treasurer's report...

...Bob Williams says he has one complete packet for our Fallen Ranger Memorial...Brian Cunningham recommends Bill McBride, former Governor of Florida...

...Bob just updated the list...

...Here is the current list for Fallen Ranger 2013:

Sid Agent - complete; Anthony Davis - complete; Robert Sanchez - complete; Tyson Nick - complete; Steven England - complete...

William McBride - pending; Jim Rogers - pending;

First six complete; first six honored this year. Others will be saved for 2014.

...absolute breaking news in real time...Bob Williams, reporting...

...Chris Fuller, OverHang Mgr, gave details about the March 10 date for the annual Porter Village Easter Egg Hunt...Steve and Al talked of candy, eggs, Gary Head cooking and no more than $250.00 in funds...approved...

...more Rangers are needed to staff the problem, RM1REE... 5 to 7 more please...

...Steve Caldwell made the motion to approve $100,000.00 for the event...didn't get a second even...

...after some discussion about how many kegs of beer we'd need for CCO, Ed Gross motioned for 4 this year and that two would be Yeungling ...passed...

...Steve Hawk asks Bob Suchke about engraving bottles of moonshine as USMRA gifts...after quite some talk, a few options are available and progress towards such a gift continues...discussion degenerates into moonshine history, laser engraving, empty, full...commemorative...

...Bob Suchke gave the Coin Report...

...Bob Williams asks about Robert Bryan's sign; Copeland keeps on Bob and it looks like another sign needs to be made as no one can find the first one...

...Billy Jack Lewis was remembered by Steve as an RI..."Ranger I love you too much to pass you"...and Jutras...short sleeve sadist from Camp Rudder...

...Al brings up being contacted about the cemetery from someone outside the committee of Roy Close, Steve Caldwell, or myself bringing it up...Steve gives some background for those unaware and being one of the committee, I've passed word along that no one needs to be at our meetings to discuss the cemetery except those on the committee...have had complete silence since then...

...Steve refers all inquiries to the committee and anything else is ignored...

...Al hopes the Committee is used in further inquiries...but I especially remarked that Al probably should be the next POC since the others have frustrated the key figure to reconfigure the committee with Keith Antonio and others...Al seems excited...

...Gary Head brings up that he and his lovely wife Debbie cleaned up the obviously neglected cemetery here on Camp, behind the Motor Pool...and "if we can't take care of that one, how can we expect to add another?"...(private cemetery on CFM we have nothing to do with yet Recycles are used to police the general area)...Gary understood yet again Chris Fuller mentioned Recycles being available...

...mumbles about Scholarships discussed by Steve Caldwell and Brian Cunningham and Al Parten and Steve Hawk, wound down to motion to end the fifty minute meeting...motion seconded and dismissal...

...Respectfully submitted to all...

My nephew is currently at the course and I thought it would be a privilege to set eyes on him, give him a word of encouragement, and let him know that as a fellow brother you are never far away. The night before, I sat at the Overhang, the NCO Club, scanned my surroundings at memorials to lost comrades, accomplished honors of the Best Ranger Competition, pictures of those who have served with the 5th RTB who set the bar high for those who follow. I could hear and see the Ranger candidates on the hill that have set their course and are eager to make their mark. It was so surreal and profoundly humbling. I plan to bring a big batch of cheese biscuits for the "Fish Fry.' I will be cooking them at my niece's place in Decatur and they should be still warm when I arrive. The basic recipe is close to New York's Red Lobster's and it is good with all fish dishes.

For the "Critter Cook-out," I am planning on either a couple of pans of "spicy" cornbread or, maybe, a desert.

All comments will be respected but not all answered.

I know that "Yankee's" are not supposed to be very good at cooking "Southern style" but I learned at the knee of a "law-cousin" from North Carolina when I was big enough to beat the batter.

Got very upset, in my day, the 3rd platoon (my platoon) was the "Ranger" platoon - now the 2nd platoon is the "Ranger" platoon with a tabbed Ranger as platoon sgt and another as a squad leader. I forgot to make a note of their names but the platoon sargeant is a friend of Doug Perry and wanted to send his regards. The 2/2 will be deploying soon and will miss the Fish Fry & Critter Cookout.

Message: USMRA January 2013 Meeting

...locating around the OverHang bar, we had Ms Bobbie Butler as guest, and some of the usual members to have a short but fine meeting...Ms Cheryl Wood also enjoyed our revelry...Keith Antonio was back, with us too...

...Steve Hawk, President, asks Sunny Bragg, Vice-President Emeritus, to provide us with a prayer and Sunny does a fine job. It's about this time I realize my recording is not working.

...the Secretary read and gave last month's minutes and the Treasurer gave a general update on the Ranger Memorial donations, and that Dan Rhodes has provided all the Treasurer's materials over to the Association. Great appreciation for Dan's 15 years as our Treasurer was noted.

...Bobbie Butler inquired as to our status now with Shady Grove Cemetery and was assured by Steve that we are continuing our interest in having the cemetery for future use as a possible Ranger Cemetery for those wishing to be laid to rest there. Some discussion about the naming of the LLC that will be in charge continued and Steve assured her that the transference will be considerate to include the family of those already there, as well as those few who might wish burial later.

...Pete Anderson asked about the Critter CookOut and Al Parten, Vice President gave the 3-5 May dates and appreciation for Steve Bishop in again securing 400 trout from the USFS Hatchery at Rock Creek.

...Sunny Bragg will again represent the organization at the Ranger Formal this year, in a tux...January 17.

...SFC Willard Brooke, Bravo Co, brought SSG Josh Purvis for his first meeting and Major Noah Steinberg , our new PA, also showed for the first time too.

...with little else on our agenda, Steve dismisses us after 36 minutes of quality time at the Club...

...respectfully submitted...

...in preview of our meeting tomorrow night, let's get the December 2012 minutes out...

...Willard Langdon, Chaplain, began our meeting with a fine prayer, sincerely given and appreciated by Steve Hawk, President...

...some doofus gave an inept, whiny Treasurer's report about not having checks and not having any report on the Ranger Memorial funds so that was it...we have more money than we had and the donations for the Ranger Memorial here at Camp Merrill will end, probably soon...

...the Secretary talked of our meeting around the bar, how LD liked it and we were getting 200 new USMRA coins just in time for those special Valentine gifts...Sunny Bragg, ex-VP, took the reins of running the meeting and we all had a proper meeting... since the Governor, his puppet president and loyal sidekick were no where around...(Steve's not really a puppet, but it sounds intriguing with 'Governor', huh?)...minutes approved.

...Brian Cunningham gave an update on the Memorial, saying adequate funds are in but some REMF S4 civilian or engineer type at Ft Benning hasn't approved and passed it on...we can visit this person, if need be.

...Steve recognized Bob Suchke as a recent video character that Channel 11 filmed at the Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery where Bob is in the back row, lending nobility and substance to such a venture. He did bring a small smackerel of product and while Steve continued about the reception and appreciation for the operation among those tea totaling Dawson County types, some tasted the proof...no doubt cut but every bit as fine as any some of you have sampled...

...Al Parten, VP, reintroduces an invoice of $500 for reimbursing Ranger Jimmy Phipps for his expenses at our last Critter CookOut...Ed Gross chastises us for having such a delinquent bill and demands we pay Jimmy in full, immediately...(just hung up with Jimmy and I'll bring him a check tomorrow)...Jerry Massey seconded and it was approved without dissent...

...next, Steve Hawk makes an excellent introduction for the Scoutmaster of Pack 303, one who began as a Tiger Cub and became an Eagle Scout, Marc Hawk, Steve's middle son.

...Marc paints a great picture of what his experience has been with Scouting and how this group has just been reestablished after falling on hard times financially. He asks for any kind of donation and Steve adds that 4 of the little hellions are Ranger Pups...

... Ed Gross wonders what we're there for...(Brotherhood and Fellowhip)...and continues with "just how many are in the group?"...22..."that seems like a pretty small percentage for us to bothered about supporting them"..."notwithstanding that my grandson is one of those 4"...says Ed...

...blistering rhetoric and reason that stuns the masses...Ed thinks we don't have any money...The Treasurer knows we are rich...Ed just locked our heels on $500 owed to Jimmy Phipps...and now Ed is calling us into a circle of Scrooges for these little guys that began as Marc Hawk did and now is the Eagle Scout qualified ScoutMaster of Pack 303!... ...Ed...is also an Eagle Scout...

...Sunny took another swallow...

...Bob Suchke makes a motion to start a fund for these little scouts by putting money on the table where Steve and Al sat...then the suggestion made, motioned that donations tonight go in too...

... with Ed wanting to get his $20 out; motion made and passed unanimously for this money to go to these little fellows...

...$157 and Bob wants to add the coin money of $30 and then $187 becomes $200...

...$200 went to Pack 303...imagine if 20 instead of just 4 were little Ranger Hellions!...

...Roy Close, a dear friend and member, was here tonight, talking of some of his recent projects. Roy was recognized as the one who got our Thanksgiving Turkeys donated from Amie's brother's business...and we approved that Amie get a 2012 CCO t shirt for all her help, so truly appreciated...

...as some talk generated about turkeys, some background garble began about the moonshine that Bob had kept under his seat, so far... Roy said if his brother in law knew how many turkeys are needed, he may be willing to set this up on a permanent basis. Steve told Chris Fuller, OverHang Manager to find out from the Sergeant Major then call him, or Al or Roy with how many birds are needed...

..."Alright, any other business?"... Steve asks..."Elections", Lt Fuzz whispers..."Oh yeah, it is December and we need to have our elections for officers this new year"...

...Everyone remained as they were with Fuzz adding Treasurer to his ponderances...Steve, President...Al, Vice President... Me, Sec/Treas...Willard, Chaplain...

...Bob Suchke remains as Coin Man and Brian Cunningham is still Planning Bay, Fallen Ranger, Scholarship and Historical...

...Brian asked for some relief...well earned as our outgoing Treasurer for 15 years...Dan Rhodes...(you have no idea how I miss his knowledge of number thingy stuff)...but there's a need to carry the radio sometime, the '60...and Brian is doing much more than his share...please someone take up belay for him...

...the idea was proposed to have an honorary type officer position created to help have enough for a meeting...Sunny Bragg is the inaugural Vice President Emeritus of the USMRA...

...saying he preferred to be off the hot seat and part of the peanut gallery, Sunny is still the resident authority on those Robert Rules of Order...Al asking him a few moments before if it's okay to have a Secretary and Treasurer as the same person...

...Sunny agrees, the office is made and all is right with the world...Sunny Bragg, VPE-MRA...

...Doug Perry, Governor Emeritus, lifetime achievement award...Steve, "We can have as many officers as we like"...

...For four box tops and a brief essay describing what sort of Emeritus you'd like to be, send a sizable donation to..."Make Me A USMRA Emeriti"...and give your chosen label...in 2 weeks you should receive a verification by all the other Emeriti that you are indeed properly one of us...

...choice ones are on a silent auction now...first one to $100 gets their brand...BatMan Emeriti...Lone Ranger Emeriti...Matt Dillon Emeriti...and just that one that fits you perfectly...a t shirt will be presented at CCO for the Emeriti Reception...Friday Night at this year's Fish Fry with Steve Bishop's continued ability to get us some 400 trout from Rock Creek Hatchery...(send your names and bids to ...Lt Fuzz, asinecure@gmail.com) ...

...an immediate collector's item and instant identification upon and from the Ranger Community..."NightHawk Emeriti"..."Dragon Emeriti"...the really good ones are confidentially kept in a sound proof room, waiting to be identified with your name on it...act now and buy two for $150, today and tomorrow only!...(unless of course, you send it later)...

...a bit of talk is made about reclassifying our status and I get to follow thru on that, Jerry Massey being glad I know it's mine now to get done...

...Al, asking about whether or not the date for the Critter CookOut is 3-5 May of this year, as he read my post on Facebook...The Corbitt Brothers are playing Saturday, the 4th of May, verified by CSM Frank James and Gentry Linville Corbitt herself...I tell Al he had to stay in the loop more...this after he said he was out in the yard last month and completely forgot about the meeting...

...Brian Cunningham plugs his band, Fowl Play, performing in Gainesville regularly...

...Steve explained the JROTC Banner we helped purchase for the Cadets to use in their parades...by this time Ed seems to be engaged in the usual murmuring that occurs after 30 minutes of sitting with this crowd...

...we set the January 2013 for TOMORROW, the 10th since the OverHang is closed on the 3rd...

...meeting ended in 46 minutes...

...RLTW...

...respectfully submitted..

Message: To all the cooks getting ready for the fish fry & critter cookout : I was recently gifted with more than three pounds of the best & purest duck fat you have ever seen. I have used four ounces to oven bake some Yukon Gold potatoes and they were quite good but three pounds for a single guy? I have three pounds in the freezer and, if anyone uses duck fat in their cooking, let me know. If you don't need the fat, maybe you can clue me in on recipes using duck fat. I have the one for the potatoes but not for anything else.
