Message: Hi Doug, In answer to your response, I've never met the man. I've only just recently read of him, as he's mentioned in the book that I cited. The author Jim Morris, who is also a Viet Nam Vet/SF Veteran who served with him, mentions this guy quite a lot in his book. The author's first meeting with him was when they were both in Okinawa with the SF Group there, and Morris, (the author) was a Lieutenant and Dring was a SSG. At any rate, the exploits of the both of them are interesting both on and off duty. Morris mentions in his book that Dring was with him in 1965, in Viet Nam, and that he had just volunteered for another tour in Viet Nam, coming out of the Mountain Ranger Camp. That's really all I know about it with regards to MRC and that affiliation. I would guess him to have been a Lietenant, because the author mentions that he went there after graduation from OCS. I know that they did rapid promotions in those days for NCOs who became Officers, and I would guess 2LT/1Lt or possibly CPT when he left to go back to Viet Nam. Again, quite a few folks rotated through CFM in those days and it was easy to get lost in the shuffle. He was predominantly SF, and not serving in US Ranger Units, in the book. Interesting stories. Difficult, and challenging times. Take care, Doug....Joe

Message: Question for Doug Perry: Do you remember Larry Dring? He's mentioned in a book that I recently read, and he's quoted as once being assigned to the Mountain Ranger Camp. It doesn't give the precise year, but I would guess around 1965. He would have been a Lieutenant or a Captain (OCS Graduate). He returned to Viet Nam and served with SF in Delta Project as a Captain according to the book. It is written that he had done multiple tours as an NCO with SF "A" Teams in Viet Nam before attending OCS. He was an advisor, or served with, ARVN Rangers and Montagnard "Mike" Forces. There are some pretty interesting stories in this book that I have just finished reading, written by Jim Morris, Captain, SF, entitled "War Story" first published in 1979. At any rate, he mentions Larry Dring several times, but in a very short part of a longer sentence, he mentioned that Larry Dring served in the Mountain Ranger Camp. Do you know him or have you ever heard of him? I know it's hard to keep up with all of the folks you ever served with especially when the rotation was 1 year in Viet Nam, and 1-2 years back in the States, at that time. Take care Doug and good luck with that nomination process. Joe
